About

Mark Johnston has spent a lifetime connecting people with trees. Through his work he has pioneered new ideas and approaches to urban forestry and urban greening that have received international recognition. Mark will discuss some of his city-wide projects and recent examples of urban forestry and the arts, including some with an international perspective. Mark Johnston has a PhD in urban forestry and is a fellow of the professional bodies for arboriculture, forestry and horticulture. He has over fifty years’ experience in the ‘tree world’, including working as a tree surgery contractor, tree officer in local government, consultant in private practice, government adviser and university academic. As a result of his work, Mark is recognised as a pioneer in the development of urban forestry and urban greening not only in Britain and Ireland but internationally. His recently published autobiography Planting Ideas in the Urban Forest is available as a free e-book from www.markjohnstontrees.com and features his work in developing several city-wide projects and national programmes.
