The Mitchell Family
The Mitchells are a musical family from The Loup, County Derry, with a deep connection to Irish traditional music that has been passed down through generations.
Brothers Kieran Mitchell (banjo) and Eamon Mitchell (fiddle), together with their siblings, inherited their love of music from their late father John Mitchell and have proudly passed that tradition on to their own children.
John and his late wife Maura Mitchell played a pivotal role in establishing the Loup CCÉ Branch in the early 1970s, helping to create a thriving traditional music community in South Derry. More than fifty years later, that community continues to flourish, with Loup CCÉ successfully hosting the County Derry Fleadh in April this year.
Carrying the Tradition Forward
The next generation of the family continues to build on this remarkable musical legacy.
John and Maura's grandchildren, Brigeen, Mairéad, Maria, Cormac, Eoin and Alannah, are among the young musicians now carrying the tradition forward.
Together, they have achieved success at Ulster and All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil competitions and are active performers and music tutors, sharing their passion for traditional music at festivals and events throughout Ireland and beyond.
A celebration of family, community and the enduring musical traditions of South Derry, passed from one generation to the next.
