From 31 July onwards, artist Susan Hughes invites visiting musicians to perform within the cathedral-like acoustics of the Tall Gallery on a purpose-built stage constructed from old doors. All are welcome to perform, participate or simply listen.
Inspired by the tradition of rural house dances, where cottage doors were lifted from their hinges and laid on the floor as makeshift dance platforms, the exhibition explores the rich and complex world of Irish traditional dance, music and song.
A Belfast-based artist and fiddle player, Susan Hughes draws on her own experiences of obsession, slow learning and collective transcendence, creating a work that celebrates both personal and shared connections to tradition.
Throughout the exhibition, the space will be activated by live music and dance performances, transforming the gallery into a living, evolving cultural gathering place.
